Abigail Brewer

Abi Brewer is a mixed-media painter based in Tuscaloosa, AL. From the age of 10, Abi trained as a classical ballet dancer and was able to dance professionally with the Alabama Ballet in Birmingham Alabama for a while after high school. This experience as a ballet dancer is a large source of inspiration for Abi’s figurative work.

After stopping her ballet career, Abi was gifted a set of oil paints by her father and began painting her interests. At this moment, Abi was also beginning her college studies, studying International Studies, Studio Art, and Chinese. Abi found that with each of her interests came a new depth to her work. She especially became interested in exploring her Chinese-American heritage through her studies of Chinese history. She still highly values a multidisciplinary approach to her work and is pursuing a Master’s in Business.

In 2022, Abi Brewer Fine Art was established. Abi began by creating and selling her works around the community and at small markets. Today, she participates in numerous exhibitions and fine art festivals as well as hosting watercolor workshops in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham. Abi also received a grant from the Tuscaloosa Arts Council to support her 2024 workshop project, a project bringing free workshops to underserved parts of the community. In August 2024, Abi also became a studio artist with the Kentuck Art Center in Northport where she holds open studio hours by appointment. She hopes to continue creating work for her collectors and art lovers as well as making art more accessible to the community of West Alabama and beyond.

What makes her a heARTist?

Reflection is at the core of Abi’s paintings. Many of her concepts revolve around memories from childhood, past experiences as a ballet dancer, and influences from their Chinese-American heritage. By exploring how these different facets of her life combine and interact, she attempts to resolve through paint what was once thought to be unconnected. Her ultimate goal through art is to honestly and vulnerably express the intricacies of her individual perspective and experiences, while also inviting others in the community to reflect on how their own personal experiences combine and, perhaps, connect in surprising ways to form beautiful and complex tapestries that define all identities.
